Emily Starr, an orphan living on New Moon Farm, wants nothing more than to attend Queen’s Academy and earn her teaching license. Her relatives at New Moon refuse her, and Emily is forced to attend Shrewsbury High School instead. Unfortunately, her education comes at a price. For one, Emily must live with her Aunt Ruth, a suspicious woman who Emily clashes with constantly. Two, Emily is not allowed to write anything that is not true-leaving her writing career to be stomped out before it even begins. Desperate to receive an education, but beaten down by Aunt Ruth’s harsh words of disrespect, Emily finds herself tested. With her relatives’ ban on writing fiction, Emily must find new ways to develop her storytelling skills in order to keep her passion alive. And as she does, Emily suddenly sees new possibilities for her life that she never would have seen before. L. M. Montgomery’s masterful writing, combined with lively, classic characters, makes Emily Climbs a whimsical coming-of-age novel that stands the test of time.
