No entanto, as tecnologias de que passámos a depender em diferentes aspectos das nossas vidas são imperfeitas e, durante a última década, estas imperfeições têm sido alvo de ladrões de identidade, cibercriminosos e pessoas mal-intencionadas dentro e fora da organização. Estas pessoas mal intencionadas têm frequentemente como alvo redes de organizações como hospitais, bancos e outras organizações financeiras. O acesso a estas redes é muitas vezes obtido contornando os mecanismos de segurança dos sistemas informáticos ligados à rede da organização. Apesar dos enormes investimentos em infra-estruturas de segurança informática e segurança da informação, mais de 95% dos bancos, hospitais e agências governamentais têm pelo menos 10 infecções maliciosas que contornam os mecanismos de segurança existentes e entram na sua rede sem serem detectadas. Este facto resultou na perda de informações valiosas e de somas substanciais de dinheiro de bancos e outras organizações em todo o mundo.
