Este livro é o resultado de um ano de investigação sobre as elites e o poder no Sudão do Sul. O seu principal objetivo era descobrir se as acusações de corrupção levantadas contra funcionários sul-sudaneses por várias fontes, incluindo organizações internacionais e peritos, bem como pelo governo do Sudão do Sul, eram corretas ou apenas uma questão de propaganda das agências ocidentais. Para minha surpresa, há razões para acreditar que a corrupção e o nepotismo existem de facto no país. Duas cartas do Presidente SalvaKiir, datadas de 3 de maio de 2012 e de 1 de junho de 2012, sobre o mesmo assunto, provam-no sem margem para dúvidas. É uma informação privilegiada sobre o que está a acontecer no novo país. O livro esclarece por que razão os líderes da jovem nação decidiram enriquecer à custa dos pobres, em vez de construírem o país pelo qual lutaram arduamente para se libertarem do que é vulgarmente conhecido como domínio árabe. A investigação descobriu uma série de factores que ligam a corrupção e o nepotismo à causa das actuais guerras civis em 2013 e 2016. O trabalho também destaca o papel das potências coloniais no incentivo e construção de uma rede corrupta de elites com o objetivo de manter o poder e a acumulação de riqueza e recursos.
