Elementary Coptic (Sahidic) Grammar

'Elementary Coptic (Sahidic) Grammar' is a foundational instructional guide designed for students and scholars seeking to master the Sahidic dialect of the Coptic language. Written by the pioneering Egyptologist Margaret Alice Murray, this work provides a clear and systematic introduction to the linguistic structures of the final stage of the ancient Egyptian language. The text covers essential elements of grammar, including the alphabet, parts of speech, and sentence construction, specifically tailored for those beginning their study of Coptic literature and ecclesiastical texts. The Sahidic dialect, once the leading literary dialect of Egypt, is crucial for the study of early Christian history and Gnostic writings. Murray’s pedagogical approach simplifies complex morphological and syntactical rules, making the language accessible to beginners. Through structured lessons and practical examples, the book serves as an invaluable resource for anyone interested in Egyptology, linguistics, or the history of the Christian East. 'Elementary Coptic (Sahidic) Grammar' remains a respected reference for its clarity and its role in preserving the linguistic heritage of late antique Egypt. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
