The relationship between electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) and oral health is intricate and multifaceted. While e-cigarettes may serve as a potentially lower-risk alternative for smokers transitioning away from traditional tobacco, they come with their own set of challenges. Nicotine, combined with other chemicals present in ENDS aerosols, can contribute to a variety of oral health problems, such as periodontal disease, xerostomia, disruptions in the oral microbiome, and possibly an elevated risk of oral cancer. The long-term effects of these devices on oral health remain unclear. By enhancing our understanding, healthcare providers can deliver evidence-based advice to users and collaborate on creating strategies to reduce harm and safeguard oral health.
