El luto incomprensible, las restricciones, las alertas, los bombardeos, pero también la alegría de vivir al lado de una familia cariñosa.Después de esa primera parte en Rouen, el libro cuenta el descubrimiento de la naturaleza en Conteville y Forges-les-Eaux, pequeños pueblos de Normandía, la experiencia de estudiar en el internado mas moderno de Francia en aquella época donde unos jóvenes profesores «agrégés» (catedráticos) de Normale Sup (L’École Normale Supérieure) iban a dar sus primeras clases antes de conocer la celebridad en el mundo intelectual de París.La guerra, la post-guerra, los valores republicanos a través de una infancia particular y, como línea directriz, el violín perdido de la madre.
