Los años que siguieron al logro de la independencia figuran entre los más huérfanos de documentación en la historia del Perú, debido al natural desorden administrativo que siguió a la ruptura con el imperio español. Ello le da un especial valor al libro del médico inglés Archibald Smith, quien luego de pasar una década en el Perú, entre 1826 y 1838, viviendo entre mineros y agricultores, “desde el palacio hasta la humilde choza”, publicó en 1839 en Londres un libro con sus recuerdos e impresiones, “con honestidad e imparcialidad”. Smith aborda temas como la alimentación de los peruanos, sus enfermedades más frecuentes, el estado de la medicina en la época, los avatares de la minería y las costumbres laborales de las diferentes clases de habitantes, que no son frecuentes en la literatura conocida como de “viajeros”.Esta es la primera traducción al castellano del libro de Smith y presenta en forma conjunta los dos tomos originales en que se dividió la obra. Fue realizada por la historiadora Magdalena Chocano, quien se ha encargado de la edición y ha escrito un sustancioso estudio introductorio. 10
