 Para conmemorar el 75° aniversario de fundación de La Casa de España en México, -cuyo espíritu de libertad y excelencia heredó su sucesor, El Colegio de México-, se rescata el primer libro publicado por esta institución en 1938: El payaso de las bofetadas y el pescador de caña de León Felipe, en una bella edición ilustrada por Emiliano Gironella Parra. Este texto, tal como lo dice su autor, no es un discurso, es un poema, un poema trágico. Es un escrito que funcionó como receptáculo de las experiencias del mundo poemático de León Felipe, en el que pretendió mostrar cómo la metáfora poética podía desembocar en la gran metáfora social en la labor del poeta activo. Un poeta como Don Quijote, que no es un loco; es reflejo de la España legítima, viva y actual, es portador del evangelio de la justicia, es el payaso de las bofetadas. Después de 75 años, pareciera que León Felipe advirtió con visión premonitoria que El payaso de las bofetadas “mañana será un libro amplio y cerrado: toda mi vida, mi pasión y mi poesía”. 10
