El paraíso perdido, publicado en 1667, es un poema narrativo de John Milton en el que el autor inglés recrea todos los acontecimientos acaecidos desde la rebelión de Satanás, antes de ser un ángel caído, hasta la expulsión de Adán y Eva del Paraíso, por haber cometido el pecado de desobediencia. Una de las características del texto es que el poeta, aunque basa su epopeya en los hechos de la Biblia, los aborda desde un punto de vista psicológico, planteando una pregunta principal: si Dios es un ser omnipotente y puede evitar todo mal y sufrimiento en la creación y en la vida del hombre, por qué no lo hace y por qué lo permite. El paraíso perdido empieza en el infierno (descrito como un lugar en el que reina la permanente insatisfacción y desesperación de los hombres), donde Satanás decide vengarse de forma indirecta de Dios, es decir, corrompiendo las almas de los seres que ha creado, que vivían en un estado de total felicidad. Cuatro años después de su publicación, Milton publicó El paraíso recobrado, un poema compuesto de cuatro libros en el que narra los esfuerzos del diablo por tentar a Jesucristo durante su paso por el desierto.
