El origen del desorden es un ensayo histórico, original de 1997. Este examina la mecánica de varios procesos revolucionarios en Europa para compararlos con la independencia en Venezuela. Ángel Bernardo Viso parte de la clasificación hegeliana de revoluciones «terribles», como la francesa de 1789, y «moderadas» como la inglesa de un siglo antes. Con esas categorías en mente, evalúa el grado en que un cambio político desata violencia y acaba con la institucionalidad preexistente.Su tesis es que la revolución que estalló en la entonces Capitanía General de Venezuela en 1810 fue terrible. Argumenta que el grado de devastación fue tan grande que la destrucción recurrente que se produjo ha podido continuar gracias a la romantización de la que ha sido objeto, durante dos siglos, en la religión patriótica.
