Desde los inicios de las más antiguas civilizaciones, el liderazgo surgió al interior de los grupos humanos como una respuesta para optimizar los recursos disponibles y conseguir objetivos comunes. Al igual que las sociedades han ido desarrollándose, el liderazgo ha ido evolucionando, pasando por diversos enfoques, teorías y planteamientos como el liderazgo innato, la teoría del gran hombre, o el enfoque por contingencias, entre otros, hasta llegar a los estilos transaccionales y transformacionales, que confieren al liderazgo un mayor y mas significativo impacto en las organizaciones. Por otra parte, el estilo de vida de nuestra sociedad actual exige cada vez mayor compromiso, desempeño y competitividad a los individuos en el ámbito laboral y académico, generando un efecto de tensión mental y emocional específico en las personas que conforman una organización determinada, identificado como desgaste profesional. Este trabajo de investigación, analiza la interacción entre los estilos de liderazgo transformacional y transaccional por un lado, y el síndrome de burnout por otro, en personal académico y directivo de una institución de educación media superior en el D.F.
