El imperio de los muertos narra la historia de la colonización y la colección científica de los ancestros prehispánicos en los Andes. Esta historia se inicia con la invasión española del Tawantinsuyu, en 1532, que transformó a los seres sagrados y «muertos vivos» de los incas en trofeos de conquista y objetos de huaqueo. Más adelante, en los siglos XIX y XX, los esfuerzos de científicos peruanos, ingleses y norteamericanos reconfiguraron a las momias y cráneos de los «antiguos peruanos» como especímenes de raza, pruebas arqueológicas de cirugía y —gracias a la figura decisiva de Julio C. Tello— ancestros nacionales, lo que evidenció la capacidad científica y la grandeza de las civilizaciones peruanas.Entrelazando la historia de la antropología y la arqueología, del colonialismo y el racismo, y de la descolonización de los museos, Christopher Heaney muestra cómo el saqueo de tumbas y la recolección científica participaron en la formación de saberes sobre el Perú y la humanidad, hasta que los «antiguos peruanos» se convirtieron en una de las mayores poblaciones reunidas en los museos del mundo. Como ha escrito el historiador Charles Walker, este «estudio notable» conduce al lector «del Tawantinsuyu a las disputas contemporáneas sobre la repatriación», prestando un «servicio extraordinario para repensar el uso presente del pasado». 10
