El espectáculo de la realidad se nos presenta como un entramado de signos ante el cual ejercemos la función de intérpretes. Mas, para asumir esta hipótesis, habremos de suspender las suposiciones que acompañan a la idea de signo y de texto habitualmente: habremos de prescindir de todo plano de sentidos y referentes previos al lenguaje, lo que implica que contamos con signos solo. Ahora los signos podrán llevarnos únicamente a otros signos en un tejido ilimitado de remisiones donde el ser de estos queda diferido, sin origen y sin soporte; y las cosas acabarán por aparecer como signos, desprovistas de la substantividad que la metafísica les otorgaba.En este libro percibiremos la realidad como texto para iluminar las principales cuestiones que la filosofía tradicional planteaba, ceñida entonces a la concepción del mundo como universo de cosas. Y la tarea transcurrirá bajo los auspicios de la hermenéutica de Gadamer y de la idea de signo preconizada por Derrida, filósofos que, aun considerados antagonistas, pueden servirnos para ensayar un enfoque nuevo. Tratando con textos y con signos, este texto se dirige a quienes decidan encararse a la realidad con espíritu filológico. 10
