Don Juan Manuel nació en el año 1282 en Escalona (Toledo). Era sobrinode Alfonso X el Sabio y nieto de Fernando III el Santo. Se responsabilizóde la autoría de sus escritos, así como de que este dato nose perdiera: depositó sus manuscritos en el monasterio de Peñafiel. DonJuan Manuel deja clara su intención de educar y moralizar a sus lectores,pero de una manera agradable, es decir, pretende enseñar deleitando.El conde Lucanor tiene siempre la misma estructura. El conde Lucanor pideconsejo sobre un tema concreto a su ayo Patronio y este le responde conun consejo y con una moraleja. El título completo de esta obra, escrita enplena Edad Media (entre los años 1331 y 1335), es Libro de los enxiemplosdel Conde Lucanor et de Patronio, en castellano medieval. De las cinco partesque componen esta obra, la más conocida es la primera, formada por 51exempla que recogen cuentos de diferentes fuentes (como Esopo o cuentostradicionales árabes), acompañados siempre de su enseñanza o moraleja.
