El comendador Mendoza, de Juan Valera (1876), sitúa los acontecimientos en 1794. Don Fabrique López de Mendoza vuelve a su pueblo natal, Villabermeja, ya con cincuenta años, después de haber llevado una vida llena de aventuras y haber ganado honores y fortuna en lugares remotos. Don Fabrique combate en La Habana contra la flota de Pocock y gana honores en aquella batalla. Así vuelve a su pueblo. Es un hombre con un temperamento liberal que le acerca a las ideas de los enciclopedistas franceses y la filosofía naturalista. Don Fabrique personaje peculiar, conocido como el Comendador, tuvo relaciones ilícitas en su juventud con doña Blanca Roldán, esposa del hacendado don Valentín de Solís. De estos amores ilegítimos nació una niña llamada Clara. En edad de contraer matrimonio, su madre, doña Blanca, quiere remediar de algún modo el desliz cometido cuando era solo una muchacha. A este efecto concibe dos soluciones:Primera, que casar a su hija con don Casimiro, heredero de don Valentín. Esta primera solución se desvanece ante la repugnancia de Clara a unirse a un hombre mucho mayor que ella y además está enamorada de don Carlos de Atienza, estudiante de Derecho. La segunda solución, es que abrace la vida monacal. La astucia y el carisma de don Fabrique evitan que Clara se encierre en un convento y consigue que ésta se una a su amado Carlos.
