Villa de Cáceres, 1464 Don Gómez de Solís, el orgulloso maestre de la Orden Militar de Alcántara, celebra los esponsales de su hermana con el caballero Francisco de Hinojosa. La familia Solís se complace exhibiendo ante sus paisanos las riquezas que le ha otorgado su poderoso benefactor: el rey Enrique IV. A los festejos acude la flor y nata de la Orden Militar, incluido su afamado clavero, don Alonso de Monroy, que es considerado el mejor caballero de su tiempo. Desafortunadamente, durante el transcurso de los juegos de cañas, se produce un fatal accidente y el clavero hiere de gravedad al joven contrayente. Acusado de intento de asesinato, el maestre Solís ordena su detención y lo envía encadenado al convento de Alcántara. En sus esfuerzos por demostrar su inocencia, el clavero don Alonso descubrirá un oscuro complot urdido por la ambición desmedida del cabeza de la Orden. Una trama que amenaza con arrastrar a todos los freires hacia la guerra civil que enfrenta al rey con su hermanastro por el trono de Castilla. En medio de este conflicto, el clavero empleará la guerra como medio de vida para intentar sobrevivir en un mundo en el que la traición, el interés y la falsedad son moneda corriente y, en cambio, los ideales caballerescos de don Alonso parecen no tener cabida.
