La obra narra el intrincado proceso de conspiraciones que la reina madre de Dinamarca, María Julia, y el conde Beltrán de Rantzau han de tramar en 1772 para expulsar del poder al malvado Estruansé, primer ministro designado sucesor de la corona por el moribundo rey Cristiano VIII. El arte de conspirar legitima la conspiración como medio para echar al hostil sucesor, colocando a Rantzau y a María Julia como los valerosos protagonistas.
