Minca is an ordinary teenage girl about to start her senior year at Franklin High School inSeattle, WA. She struggles with self-esteem, and at her seventeenth birthday party she blows outher candles wishing to be comfortable in her own skin and to have a boyfriend. All of thatchanges after touching an antique journal. She is astral-projected to Hagia Sophia in Istanbul on May 29, 1453, during the fall ofthe Byzantine Empire. She witnesses Turkish soldiers taking parishioners captive, and herancestor, Father Matthew, a Greek Orthodox priest, disappears into the altar wall with the HolyCommunion vessels. Once she returns to the present, Minca learns that her dad is part of a groupof priests called the Skopoi, whose job is to watch for the Antichrist. The Skopoi tell her she isthe Eklektos (the chosen one in Greek). They explain that Nero (the Antichrist) has been releasedand needs to open two more portals while increasing war, strife, anger, and division. If he succeeds, humankind will become servants of the Devil and his demons.Even so, Minca must still attend high school. There she meets Cuauhtémoc, an exchange student from Mexico with unusual, glowing eyes. She is immediately drawn to him, but is unsure of who he is. Until later, when she finds out he is part ofan Aztec werewolf pack that is surprisingly Orthodox Christian and there to fight alongside her. They fall in love, but their love faces challenges, partly because he isn’t allowed to marry non-werewolves.Amid her forbidden love and spiritual attacks from Nero, Minca must rely on her OrthodoxChristian faith and her father’s guidance to return the Holy Spirit to Hagia Sophia in the form ofthe Holy Light from the Church of the Holy Sepulcher to free her ancestor andsave the world.
