This book originated from a sense that an essential element was absent. India is a civilisation with a longstanding tradition of profound intellectual inquiry. Nevertheless, many educated Indians today are more familiar with Western thinkers such as Locke, Mill, Marx, and Keynes than with their own intellectual heritage. While Western schools of political thought are readily enumerated, indigenous traditions are often not as accessible. Present-day discourse frequently invokes concepts like liberty and equality, yet older discussions concerning Dharma, Moksha, holistic personhood, and the welfare of the least fortunate have been partially neglected. Among those who endeavoured to renew this dialogue, Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya is particularly notable. I considered it worthwhile to explain his philosophy clearly and accessibly to general readers. My approach has been explanatory rather than detached or partisan. My objective is to engage with his ideas from within, presenting them so that new readers may appreciate not only his assertions but also their underlying rationale and intended purpose. 6
