Dee Gascoignes Leben ist ein einziger Schlamassel. Ihre Ehe ist vorbei, sie hat ihren Job verloren und jetzt erholt sie sich von einer üblen Bronchitis. Ihre Familie hat sie in ein kleines Küstendorf geschickt, wo sie bei einem alten Freund bleiben soll. Ein Tapetenwechsel und etwas Erholung müssten genau das sein, was Dee braucht, während sie über ihre Zukunft nachdenkt.Aber Bösartigkeit und Gefahr lauern sogar in einem winzigen Ort wie Porthlea. Dee erkennt schnell, dass nichts ihre Gedanken so gut von ihren Problemen ablenkt wie ein Mord. Die örtliche Polizei ist nicht interessiert, aber nichts kann Dee davon abhalten, Fragen zu stellen. Sie wusste bereits, dass dies kein gewöhnlicher Moment war. Es herrschte ein muffiger, abgestandener Geruch, und noch etwas anderes. Der metallische Geruch von Blut lag in der Luft. Als sie den Raum betrat, rätselte sie immer noch darüber, dass offenbar Blut vorhanden war. Immerhin hatte niemand etwas darüber gesagt, dass...Sie blieb abrupt stehen. Auf dem Tisch standen eine Weinflasche und ein einzelnes Glas, in dem sich noch ein kleiner Rest Wein befand. Neben der Weinflasche lief immer noch leise das Radio, die Musik war eine alte Tanzkapellenmelodie, die in dieser Situation gespenstisch deplatziert wirkte. Gänsehaut breitete sich auf Dees Armen aus.Widerwillig, aber in dem Wissen, dass es sich nicht vermeiden ließ, zwang sich Dee, Sheila Fenniston anzusehen. Sie war leicht zur Seite gefallen, lehnte an der Tischkante; der Kopf war in den Nacken gekippt, die Augen halb geöffnet, den Blick auf etwas gerichtet, das Dee nicht sehen konnte. Sheila trug ein langes Nachthemd von erstaunlich schlichter Art. Ihre Hände lagen in ihrem Schoß, und an den Unterarmen und auf dem Schoß ihres Nachthemdes befand sich eine braune, klebrige Blutspur. Diese war auf beiden Seiten von ihr heruntergelaufen und hatte zwei Pfützen auf dem dünnen, alten Teppich gebildet. Und neben ihrem rechten Fuß, im Halbdunkel sanft schimmernd, lag ein Rasiermesser, das mit Blut beschmiert war.Dee legte ihre Finger an Sheilas Hals, obwohl sie wusste, dass es sinnlos war. Die Haut war kalt. Es gab keinen Puls. Dee ging rückwärts aus dem Zimmer und tastete sich die Treppe hinunter. Sie schloss die Eingangstür hinter sich und sagte mit schwacher Stimme: 'Niemand darf hinein. Sheila ist tot. Wir müssen sofort die Polizei holen.'
