Krebs ist eine verheerende Krankheit, die fast alle Altersgruppen betrifft. Im Grunde genommen sind Krebszellen solche Zellen, die die übliche Kontrolle über ihr Wachstum und ihre Teilung verloren haben. Sie zeichnen sich durch Immortalisierung, Transformation und Metastasierung aus. Die Metastasierung ist der eigentliche Unterschied zwischen einem bösartigen Tumor (der in normales Gewebe eindringen kann) und einem klinisch gutartigen Tumor (der nicht in normales Gewebe eindringt). Die Tumorbildung kann spontan erfolgen oder durch Karzinogene oder Tumorviren ausgelöst werden. Auf molekularer Ebene wird sie durch die Aktivierung von Onkogenen, den Funktionsverlust von Tumorsuppressorgenen, die Deregulierung von DNA-Reparatur- und Genomstabilitätsgenen verursacht.
