近百年来最大的变化莫过于'解放'。这是一个悲壮的年代,也是一个狂欢的年代。这是一个荒唐的年代,也是一个确凿的年代。作者的家族就生活在这个年代,冯、许两家祖辈生活在黄海之滨的富安镇。土改开始了。外公许子见是富安镇最大的地主,为逃避镇压,走上了逃亡之路,从此人间蒸发。许家的土地悉数分给了农民,外婆遭到批斗,母亲一家隐姓埋名逃难到上海。父亲和母亲在上海结婚,舅舅从一台缝纫机开始创业,集冯、许两家之力创办了华美服装厂,在上海又打出了一片天地。公私合营中,服装厂收归国有。爷爷冯稼祥,年轻时家道中落,只身到上海打工,创办了榻车行、煤球厂、汽车运输公司。企业在巅峰时,遭到日本军轰炸,爷爷死无葬身之地。爷爷死后,大伯继承了冯家的企业。冯家企业在公私合营中也收归国有,大伯被逼疯。嬢嬢是小学校长,写信给上海市长,说'公私合营'违反中华人民共和国1954年通过的宪法,被打成右派,开除公职,夫离子散。作者第三代都出生在解放以后,过着赤贫的生活。在经历了饥荒年代、文化大革命、上山下乡后长大了。八十年代初,国民经济到了崩溃的边缘,大量国企倒闭,弟弟辞去公职创业,成为最先富起来的个体户,买了上海最早的两辆私家车,被人举报税务问题,遭到税务检察通缉,逃亡香港。作者顶替母亲退休的名额从黑龙江生产建设兵团回到上海国营服装厂,这个厂公私合营前就是许家的服装厂,十年时间,作者从工人一直做到厂长。1989年1月,作者辞去国营厂长的职务,偷渡到澳门,后移居香港,最后定居纽约。作者成立公司,整合家族的力量,重建生意辉煌。作者清晰地看到几代人前赴后继,欲海沉浮,各自走完了自己的一生。人生就是'人为财死,鸟为食亡'而已。中国人在这百年中遭受的苦难只是中国苦难历史的延续,中国社会两千年来,要么统一,专制;要么分裂,战乱。苦难是中国人的常态,人们早已身在苦中不知苦,且苦中作乐。人生就是磨难,难中见真情,并磨砺出人性的光芒,照亮漫漫长夜的人生路。
