This volume includes eight chorale-settings and two short devotional pieces. Prelude on Aberystwyth has two versions. The tune is melismatically obscured in the original version, explicit in the alternate. Three Variations on Ton-y-Botel (Ebenezer) are pastoral, whimsical and melodramatic, respectively. Three Passion Preludes were inspired by specific Scripture: - Bicinium on the Passion Chorale (O Sacred Head), from the mocking torment described in Matthew 27:29-30 - Canticle on O Lamm Gottes unschuldig, from the wondrous depiction of elders singing before the Lamb in Revelation 5:8-9 - Prélude-Étude on The King’s Majesty, from the assuring yet fearsome prophesy of Isaiah 59:19-20 Prayer and Adagietto serve as reverential interludes during worship. In terms of difficulty, Prayer and the alternate version of Prelude on Aberystwyth are easy; Prélude-Étude on The King’s Majesty is challenging; remaining pieces are intermediate. All can be played with satisfying effect on a typical 2-manual church organ. 3
