Powszechnie wiadomo, że leki przeciwpsychotyczne powodują efekty pozapiramidowe. Prowadzi to niekiedy do nieprzestrzegania zaleceń dotyczących terapii farmakologicznej i/lub dodania lub odstawienia jednego lub kilku leków. W książce oceniono EPS risperidonu i olanzapiny w przypadku przepisywania ich pacjentom ze schizofrenią pochodzenia indyjskiego. Chociaż leki przeciwpsychotyczne drugiej generacji powodują mniej EPS, to jednak nie są one całkowicie wolne od tych objawów. Do pomiaru EPS użyto skali Simpsona-Angusa, opracowanej w 1970 roku, która jest najczęściej stosowanym narzędziem do oceny objawów pozapiramidowych w praktyce klinicznej.
