A retenção ortodôntica tem como objetivo manter os dentes nas suas posições corrigidas após a conclusão do movimento dentário ortodôntico. Os dentes têm tendência a regressar às suas posições iniciais devido à tensão das fibras periodontais, particularmente as que se encontram à volta do colo dos dentes (fibras interdentais e dento-gengivais). Devido à remodelação das fibras periodontais, os primeiros 8 meses após o tratamento ortodôntico são cruciais, pelo que as contenções coladas se tornaram cada vez mais populares para evitar recidivas indesejadas e aumentar a estabilidade. Estudos retrospectivos a longo prazo sobre os efeitos na saúde periodontal demonstraram que não se verificou uma deterioração significativa em qualquer parâmetro de saúde periodontal ou dentária, apesar de se verificar um aumento da acumulação de placa bacteriana e de cálculo em indivíduos com contenção fixa 15 anos após o tratamento.Assim, o principal objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o impacto de diferentes aparelhos de contenção lingual na saúde e estabilidade periodontal.
