As pílulas contraceptivas orais de baixa dosagem (PCO) são amplamente utilizadas por milhões de mulheres de várias condições socioeconómicas. Estas são agora componentes indispensáveis do programa de planeamento familiar e reduziram substancialmente os factores de risco tromboembólicos e cardiovasculares que, segundo consta, estavam presentes na geração anterior de pílulas. Embora os aspectos de segurança destas pílulas tenham sido bastante bem estudados em populações bem nutridas com um índice de massa corporal normal ou superior, os mesmos aspectos têm de ser reinvestigados em mulheres malnutridas, que constituem uma percentagem substancial das utilizadoras de PCO nos países em desenvolvimento. No presente estudo, foram estudados os efeitos das pílulas sobre a glicose no sangue e alguns factores cardiovasculares.
