Os dicalcogenetos de metais de transição (TMDCs) têm a fórmula geral MX2, em que M é um metal de transição (M=W, Mo) dos grupos IVB, VB e VIB da tabela periódica e X é um dos calcogénios, nomeadamente S, Se e Te. A sua estrutura básica é composta por camadas X-M-X fracamente ligadas, o que torna o material extremamente interessante, pois dentro de uma camada as ligações são fortes, enquanto entre as camadas são notavelmente fracas. Eficiências significativas de conversão de energia óptica em energia elétrica/química foram obtidas em células solares fotovoltaicas e fotoeletroquímicas de estado sólido com interface semicondutor-eletrólito TMDC.
