本书是清华大学414派二把手的文革回忆录，主要记述了作者亲历的清华文革前期的多个重大历史事件、重要历史人物，以及一路走来的心路历程。本书在前面写了一点上清华之前的经历和大学生活，交代了历史背景和思想基础。在后面还写了一点留校当教师和离开清华之后的几件事，因为文革虽已远去但并没有成为过去时。最后一章是作者对文革的简要回顾和反思，其最后二节内容因比较尖锐是本书初版时没有收录的。本书可供想了解、研究清华文革的读者、学者参考。在清华文革初期的政治光谱中，蒯大富在我的左边，沈如槐在我的右边，我居二者间。在蒯大富的左边是刘才堂，在沈如槐的右边是周泉缨。与我站在同一点的是汲鹏，以及我们背后的'天安门纵队'和'三七战团'。很遗憾，左，并不代表正确；右，也不代表正确。左与右的中间点，同样不代表正确。它们离正确都相距甚远。
