這是一本用真實經歷、以鮮血和淚水寫就的回憶錄。作者任松林是一位普通的中國留美學生,曾教過大學、做過研究,在矽谷從事過半導體和軟體技術開發。退休之後,他致力於寫作,記錄下一個普通人家在共產中國被迫害、家破人亡的真實故事。1966年文化大革命爆發,作者年僅十二歲,一夜之間家被抄沒、親人遭毒打、全家被逐出北京,流放到貧瘠的鄉村。一個六口之家,四位親人──外婆、母親、父親、大姨──先後慘死於那場浩劫。失學的少年被迫忍飢挨餓,在飢荒、批鬥與羞辱中掙扎求生,嘗盡人間苦難。每次和朋友談起這些慘絕人寰的往事,大家都鼓勵他如實記錄下來。但沉痛的過去不堪回首,每次坐在桌前都心痛得無法下筆。直到近古稀之年,終於含著眼淚寫了出來。書中三代人的不同命運,描繪出中共統治下的中國大陸,尤其是毛澤東時代與文化大革命時期的真實面貌。中國經濟上的'改革開放'並沒有改變中共的政權性質。 '溫故而知新',苦難不應隨時間的流逝而被遺忘,人們更不能為了眼前的利益而選擇自我麻痺。每個小家庭的遭遇都是時代的縮影,是大歷史的微小單元,理應記錄下來,讓下一代知道真實的歷史--只有溫故,才能知新。然而苦難沒有壓垮他。他小學未畢業便被迫輟學,憑著不屈的意志與自學,他在恢復高考後考入名校,遠赴美國獲得物理博士學位,最終在異鄉找到了屬於自己的自由與尊嚴。如書名所寓:縱使青山被焚為焦土,也永不忘記,永不屈服。如今,美國的左右之爭同樣激烈,一些自詡'追求社會平等'的社會主義者欺騙了不少人,尤其是年輕人。作者希望透過親身經歷告訴世人:社會主義是通往奴役之路,必然導致暴政;共產主義不是烏托邦,只是死亡的迴光返照。
