本書最早的初稿，是完成於一九七零年的中期，部分曾經在報章上發表過。當時筆者不過才二十來歲；所提及的歌曲，又全是西方社會在六十年代，甚至更早的產物。不同的時期，不同的國界，不同的年齡，不同的思想，孕育出來完全異於現代的作品。在那個時代，沒有電腦，也沒有維基百科，就連英文歌詞，也不太容易找到。今天完全不同了，不必再找唱片或者錄音帶，而隨時可以在網上，欣賞到絕大多數的歌曲，包括這本書裡全部所提及的。而且在現時的網上，多的是各種分析音樂的文章，不像從前的年頭。然而，物以稀為貴，如今資源是如此的豐富，一切反而卻會貶值了。 人們大概從沒聽過書上所提的歌曲，而只是看了這些文章而已，那麼在樂理和軼事之外，其它的文字內容，是否會在讀者的內心深處，還能產生一些感應或共鳴嗎？
