作者是位年近八旬的理论工作者、民主人士，生于二十世纪四十年代，亲身经历了中国近代的历次政治运动，土地改革、镇压反革命、'三反五反'、合作化、反右派、大跃进、公社化、社教、四清运动，等等。他用细腻、流畅的文字及含泪的情感将自己的所见、所闻倾泻出来。特别是一九六六年六月爆发的'文化大革命'，作者以曾是一个'红卫兵'身份，将中国基层城市及乡村'文革'运动的全过程加以了详叙。同时对文革结束后所开展的'拉网'、清理'三种人'运动等也加以了披露。对改革开放中普通民众如何'下海'，在极其复杂、病态的市场环境下，创业中所遇的种种艰难、险阻等，均一一加以陈述。整本书恰似一幅展示现代中国城乡各个阶层状况的画卷，为读者呈现出这是一个不可思议的国度，经历的是一个与人类社会发展迥异的、非常特殊的年代。其写作意图是：原原本本地还原东方古国的社会现实，希冀对世人、后人了解这个国家昨天所走的印迹和明天的发展趋势有所裨益。
