本書簡介本書系原中國科學院地球化學研究所科研人員吳明清先生的自傳體回憶錄，真實記錄了他從貴州貧困山區走出，通過自身的刻苦努力最終成為中科院的優秀科研人員的歷程。作為新中國的同齡人，作者親歷了反右派、大躍進、文革等政治運動，文革中成為一名工農兵大學生， 1978年考入中國科學院大學攻讀研究生，師從著名中科院院士郭承基教授，專攻稀土元素地球化學。因科研成果突出，獲評全國中青年專家並享受國務院政府特殊津貼，後公派加拿大從事國際合作研究，訪問計畫結束按期歸國後，因遭遇不公再度出國並旅居海外。書中以生動翔實的語言展現了作者對學習、工作和生活的熱情及豁達的人生態度，詳細記述了貴州偏僻山區的諸多民俗民風及風土人情、以及野外地質考察與科研經歷，同時還普及了某些地球科學知識，是一部融故事性與知識性於一體，讀來引人入勝並發人深思的佳作。
