Known variously as Lan, Lachie or Lachlan, depending on your inclination, Lachlan MacDonald is acknowledged by many in his various guises: Highlander and islander, sailor, dentist, fear an taighe (master of ceremonies), father, grandfather, husband and loyal friend. This anthology of stories from his past (and also some present) gives the reader a sense of a (mostly) true history of an intriguing and interesting personality known by some as eccentric. Born on the island of Lismore at the start of World War II, Lachie had a happy, if solitary, childhood. Born between two cultures, bilingual in Gaelic and English, an occasional rebel, he eventually became a dentist. Moving between England and Scotland with his family initially, he lived on the East coast for many years, finally settling in Glasgow for his children's formative years. For most of his life he has maintained his Highland home and his roots, mainly through sailing in the West and his love of the Highlands, Gaelic choirs and, most of all, stories, many of which he recounts in this poignant and humorous piece of writing. He shares with us his elations and deflations in an honest prose which will amuse and occasionally confuse you.
