    K D Halliwell
The ambiguously titled Love Bites is the debut offering from K D Halliwell, a Milton Keynes based author who describes the collection as a document of her twenties. Original and with a format that stands out from the ordinary, it is proving particularly well-received by those who “don’t normally like poetry”. Originally written by hand, the author has traversed a fine line betw...

  • Polishing the Silver
    Jennifer Chrystie
‘There’s a touch of both Dickinson and Larkin in Jennifer Chrystie’s mature exhumation of the tales and tropes of family. Figures who could so easily flit like phantoms in her well honed poetry are palpably enjoying an after-life in the poet’s ability to redeem through deep understanding. The collection arcs from, at one extreme, the parsimonies of the household, to the transce...

  • One Kiss
    Edward V Bonner
The very title of Edward V. Bonner's first volume of poetry, One Kiss (Ingram, 2015), suggests some ways in which the poems inside balance the universal with the particular. Most of the poems examine the themes of beauty and risk, pleasure and danger, in the context of one of three kinds of relationships: to romantic partners, to the spiritual world, and to the world of nature....

James Cooper, my father, passed away before he could write this foreword. He had been terminally ill for the entirety of his published writing career, but wrote and created tirelessly. It was his wish for his poems and stories to survive him, to leave us with great, enduring beauty in the wake of such pain.Though this book is not about him, strictly speaking, there is so much o...

It's a unique challenge to write fictional accounts of psychotherapy when the author is also a practicing psychologist. Our everyday encounters take place in more contexts than we are aware of, calling for images and descriptions that never conform to a simple appreciation of me, you, ours, distilling and hiding explanations, illuminating wish and need. These are not disguis...

  • The Sages of West 47th Street
    J.L. Cooper
These memoirs and creative nonfiction stories tell mostly of my youth and early twenties, the psychologist in the boy, childhood in a suburban town during the Cold War followed by a willful outward push into the world, taking to the road. Memories are ephemeral, with shadows and streaks of light breaking through. I’ve found great richness in relationships, as well as in private...
