Voor u ligt een vertaling van de drie boeken aan Autolycus, geschreven door de zesde opvolger van de apostel Petrus als bisschop van Antiochië. De vertaling is bewerkt naar de franse tekst van Jean Sender met de wetenschappelijke inleiding en notities door Gustave Bardy, uitgegeven in de collectie Sources chrétiennes, n° 20 (Cerf, 1948). De bedoeling van dit werk is de lezer de gelegenheid te geven een vroegchristelijke apologetische tekst in zijn geheel te kunnen benaderen. Opzettelijk zijn daarom de wetenschappelijke notities achterwege gelaten om kennis te maken met een authentiek christelijk geschrift en mede daardoor ruimere belangstelling hiervoor te stimuleren. Het wetenschappelijk commentaar, de voetnoten en verdere historische verklaringen zijn te vinden in de oorspronkelijke uitgave van de hierboven vermelde collectie. De lezer zal bemerken dat deze vroegchristelijke apologetische litteratuur zijn eigentijdse christelijke cultuur en gedachten in een bredere horizon zal plaatsen. Temeer omdat deze 'Drie boeken aan Autolycus' een apologie van het jonge christendom wil zijn in confrontatie met een overheersend heidense cultuur.
