The protagonist, Stephen Bailey is a strange lad, meandering his way through life and school, no real career paths or goals chosen, living in an environment dominated by quarrelling parents and an almost intolerable older sister. However, he witnesses something that completely changes him and gives him a clear goal as to what career he wishes to pursue, to be a Firefighter.
