Síndrome de disfunção da dor miofascial é um termo comum que é utilizado noutros ramos médicos fora da Medicina Dentária. Mas nas últimas décadas, este termo tem sido utilizado em Medicina Dentária para descrever a dor crónica orofacial, muitas vezes abreviada na literatura como MPDS ou DOR MIOFASCIAL (MFP).A dor miofascial (DMF) pode ser uma condição muito desconfortável para o paciente. O doente mal consegue mover a mandíbula e, frequentemente, sente dor na zona da face e da cabeça. Por vezes, a dor pode estender-se ao pescoço e à zona dorsal. É bastante comum e tratável. No entanto, se não for diagnosticada e tratada, pode evoluir para uma dor crónica com problemas psicossociais e funcionais associados. Isto pode levar a mais angústia, ansiedade e mesmo depressão. O ciclo vicioso pode dar origem a mais preocupações somáticas. Esta importante fonte de disfunção músculo-esquelética requer uma atenção mais direcionada. O seu diagnóstico e tratamento precoces podem ajudar a reduzir as complicações psicossociais associadas e os encargos financeiros decorrentes da síndrome da dor crónica.
