Mae Don Quixote de la Mancha, Rhan Gyntaf, yn un o gampweithiau pennaf llenyddiaeth y byd, ac yn hanes sy’n cyfuno antur, dychan, hiwmor a myfyrdod dwfn ar y berthynas rhwng breuddwyd a realiti. Mae’n adrodd hanes Alonso Quixano, gŵr bonheddig o La Mancha a feddiannwyd gan rym ei ddychymyg ar ôl darllen yn ddi-baid lyfrau marchogaeth, nes iddo gredu mai ef ei hun yw marchog-crwydryn â dyletswydd i amddiffyn y gorthrymedig ac adfer cyfiawnder yn y byd. Gan fabwysiadu’r enw Don Quixote, ac ymuno â’i geffyl Rocinante a’i sgwïer ffyddlon Sancho Panza, cychwynnir ar gyfres o anturiaethau lle y mae ei weledigaeth aruchel o’r byd yn gwrthdaro â realiti bob dydd.Drwy’r anturiaethau enwog hyn - o’r frwydr â’r melinau gwynt i’r digwyddiadau rhyfedd mewn tafarndai, ac o gyfarfyddiadau â bugeiliaid a theithwyr i gamddealltwriaethau doniol sy’n codi o’i ddehongliad ef o’r byd - mae Cervantes yn creu un o’r cymeriadau mwyaf cofiadwy mewn llenyddiaeth. Mae Don Quixote yn ffigwr comig ac abswrd, ond hefyd yn arwr truenus ac urddasol sy’n cynrychioli grym ffydd, dychymyg a’r awydd dynol i geisio byd gwell. Wrth ei ochr saif Sancho Panza, ei wrthgyferbyniad perffaith: dyn ymarferol a synhwyrol, ond eto’n llawn doethineb gwerinol a charedigrwydd.Y tu hwnt i’w hiwmor a’i anturiaethau, mae’r gyfrol hon yn archwiliad meistrolgar o natur llenyddiaeth, peryglon rhithiau a’r modd y mae dyn yn ceisio rhoi ystyr i’w fywyd. Mae Cervantes yn gwawdio hen gonfensiynau straeon marchogaeth, tra ar yr un pryd yn dangos parch at allu’r dychymyg i gyfoethogi profiad dynol. Gyda’i gymeriadau bywiog, ei ddeialog wych a’i ddoethineb parhaol, mae Rhan Gyntaf Don Quixote yn parhau’n un o weithiau mawr di-ddarfod llenyddiaeth y byd. 6
