Don Quixote ist zweifellos eines der wichtigsten Bücher der Weltliteratur, ganz zu schweigen von seiner Bedeutung im spanischsprachigen Raum. In der Literaturgeschichte des Abendlandes begründet das Werk die neue Gattung Roman. Der Ritter Don Quijote hat bald nach seiner Geburt ein eigenes Leben als literarische Figur entwickelt, die Cervantes, der wohl ursprünglich eine kurze, herbe Parodie auf die damals populären Rittergeschichten schreiben wollte, völlig mitgerissen hat. Jedoch nur vordergründig betrachtet ist der Don Quijote eine Parodie auf Ritterromane. Das zentrale Thema Cervantes’ ist die Frage, was in unserer Umwelt Wirklichkeit ist und was Traum, der Konflikt zwischen Ideal und Realität. Nicht nur den Sinnen, auch den Worten kann man nicht vertrauen, selbst Namen werden zweideutig. Sogar der Leser bleibt im Zweifel, ob er seinen Helden als versponnenen Idealisten oder aber als lächerlichen Narren einordnen soll. Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra (1547-1616) war ein spanischer Schriftsteller. Der Autor des Don Quijote gilt als Spaniens Nationaldichter.
