Os cancros orais são frequentemente diagnosticados em fases avançadas e requerem habitualmente a remoção cirúrgica do tumor e dos tecidos circundantes, muitas vezes seguida de radioterapia e quimioterapia. A cirurgia que envolve o palato e o seio maxilar pode criar uma comunicação oro-nasal que afeta a deglutição, a fala e a ingestão de líquidos, causando um sofrimento físico e emocional significativo. A reabilitação prostodôntica desempenha, por isso, um papel essencial na restauração da função e na melhoria da qualidade de vida.A reabilitação de defeitos maxilares adquiridos é complexa devido à limitação dos tecidos de suporte, à perda de dentes que afeta a retenção, à cicatrização deficiente e às alterações teciduais contínuas. A gestão ocorre tipicamente em três fases: um obturador cirúrgico colocado imediatamente após a cirurgia, um obturador provisório fornecido num prazo de 3 a 4 semanas durante a cicatrização, e um obturador definitivo fabricado após 6 a 12 meses, uma vez estabilizados os tecidos. Os avanços na imagiologia, biomateriais, implantes, enxertos ósseos, reconstrução microvascular e oxigenoterapia hiperbárica melhoraram significativamente os resultados da reabilitação.
