Does My Soul Fly to Heaven on a Kite? was inspired by the author's three-year-old grandson, Alex. After listening to the adults' dinner conversation about parents' souls and children's souls being in heaven together, Alex asked, "How does my soul get to heaven?"This is a serious theological question people of all ages wrestle with throughout their lifetime. But the author's approach is lighthearted with whimsical illustrations of riding to heaven between the ears of an elephant, jumping on a jackelope, driving a slow-moving tractor, or hopping on a grasshopper. From an educational point of view, the ABC format is a teaching tool. Also, the use of alliteration, colorful adjectives, and lively (action-packed) verbs assist in developing children's vocabularies and language skills. The frequent use of question marks may help early learners distinguish between a question and a statement. At the end, the author acknowledges that Alex is asking an excellent question with an answer full of mystery that only God knows. Does My Soul Fly to Heaven on a Kite? points toward Christian teachings of grace and following the fruits of the Spirit, which Jesus taught, making God accessible to anyone seeking the answer to Alex's question. As Alex (now six years old) grows, he continues to ask stimulating questions. He has asked the author to write another book answering the question, "How does God show his love on earth?" So many theological questions we all seek to answer throughout our lives! Perhaps the author will provide a sequel to Does My Soul Fly to Heaven on a Kite? with the young audience in mind.
