Assume is a compound word that Alondra redefines with this body of work: a collection of poems which allowed her/them to heal from the past. This book almost saves her from being pigeonholed as the crazy, overly ambitious brown latiné person in the class... And allowed her/them the ability to relive beautiful and painful moments of the past which shaped the adult and Doctor (of Veterinary Medicine, DVM) they became. The collection of poems included in this book were carefully picked to shed light on these memories and lessons learned in the hopes of inspiring and cautioning other artists. The target audience being life-long-learners who need prose in their life. These poems were inspired by journal entries from the last 7-10 years and reflect the healing capacity of art as therapy. Themes highlighted in these works are centered on love, ambition, and sensitive content such as emotional abuse, sexual assault (SA), suicidal ideation, and other adjacent topics that resonate with artists and humans of the world today. Alondra hopes that her poetry can help others heal, but most importantly she writes to help the world be less alone. In summary // tldr: 'Assume is a compound word which I re-define poetically through this book:

  • Polishing the Silver
    Jennifer Chrystie
‘There’s a touch of both Dickinson and Larkin in Jennifer Chrystie’s mature exhumation of the tales and tropes of family. Figures who could so easily flit like phantoms in her well honed poetry are palpably enjoying an after-life in the poet’s ability to redeem through deep understanding. The collection arcs from, at one extreme, the parsimonies of the household, to the transce...

  • One Kiss
    Edward V Bonner
The very title of Edward V. Bonner's first volume of poetry, One Kiss (Ingram, 2015), suggests some ways in which the poems inside balance the universal with the particular. Most of the poems examine the themes of beauty and risk, pleasure and danger, in the context of one of three kinds of relationships: to romantic partners, to the spiritual world, and to the world of nature....
