O objetivo deste livro é estudar o processo e as modalidades do discurso do texto religioso no romance magrebino francófono contemporâneo. Procura decifrar as atitudes, que vão da empatia à subversão - esta última caracterizada por preconceitos, estereótipos ou desejo de se conformar às expectativas dos leitores ocidentais -, através das quais os autores optam por investir as origens históricas do Islão nas suas ficções românticas. Assia Djebar, Salim Bachi, Driss Chraïbi e Mohammed Ennaji convidam o leitor a explorar uma outra forma de narrativa ficcional, que visa não só criticar os modos de pensar das suas sociedades, no mundo muçulmano e no Ocidente, mas também, e sobretudo, construir pontes entre duas culturas com visões divergentes. Desta forma, convidam o leitor a refletir sobre um Islão pacífico e tolerante que defende a diversidade, valoriza o discurso inter-religioso e promove a pluralidade e a abertura.
