Leah Hampton had a fiance who called it love and a job that called it stability. She had neither anymore by the time she decided to walk three thousand miles instead. Two years after her mother’s death and eight months after calling off her engagement, Leah sells what she owns, ends her lease, and starts north from the Mexican border with a pack she doesn’t yet know how to carry and a journal she promises herself she will fill honestly, even on the days that break her a little. The Continental Divide Trail does not go easy on her. A burned-out paramedic teaches her to care for her own blisters before a rattlesnake teaches her something sharper about fear. A sharp-tongued widow teaches her that a boundary is not a wall. A reckless, charming drifter refuses to hear the word no until the trail forces the lesson on both of them at once, in a stretch of Wyoming desert with real consequences. Rivers run high with snowmelt. A moose charges a half-buried cabin in a Colorado whiteout. A grizzly comes close enough to change how she breathes for the rest of the day. And somewhere in all of it, mile by unglamorous mile, Leah starts hearing her own voice again. Divide Within is a novel about grief that does not resolve on schedule, about boundaries as a form of self-respect rather than isolation, and about the particular, quiet courage it takes to keep walking when nobody is watching and no one is keeping score. It follows Leah past the Canadian border and back into an ordinary life she has to learn to live differently, with a friendship worth repairing, an old job she will not do the old way anymore, and a Saturday morning spent teaching a stranger the one small thing that once saved her.

Stuart Evans’s first novel is a comedy-of-ill-manners set in a nouveau riche milieu: a fantastic satirical performance and hyper-referential homage to masters past and present. Paul Keller is the Stephen Dedalus of the piece, the son of Robert and Sylvie, whose internal monologue is spliced into the action, and whose incestuous feelings for his sister lead to an increase in his...
