Alcune condizioni di lavoro, come il lavoro a turni, alterano la qualità del sonno. Gli operatori sanitari sono i più esposti a questi problemi perché lavorano in orari atipici e contro l’orologio biologico. Abbiamo studiato le particolarità della qualità del sonno in 60 operatori sanitari suddivisi in due gruppi: GI: lavoratori notturni (57%) e GII: lavoratori diurni (43%). La durata media del sonno per i lavoratori IG è stata di 6 ore al giorno e per i lavoratori GII di 7,5 ore al giorno. Il tempo medio impiegato per addormentarsi è stato di 26,3 minuti per gli IG rispetto ai 36,8 minuti per i GII. Il sonno non è stato ristoratore nel 60% dei partecipanti. I disturbi del sonno riferiti dai lavoratori notturni erano insonnia (47%), ipersonnia (12%) o sonno agitato (12%), mentre quelli dei lavoratori diurni erano sonno agitato (15%) e insonnia (8%). La sonnolenza diurna è stata riscontrata nel 38% dei GII rispetto al 77% dei GI. La stanchezza eccessiva è stata segnalata nel 35% di tutti i lavoratori. La prevalenza della sindrome da apnea notturna era del 25% e i lavoratori notturni erano più a rischio del 29%.
