A distalização dos molares maxilares ajuda a ganhar espaço que pode ser utilizado para corrigir problemas leves a moderados na arcada maxilar. É feita para empurrar os molares terminais maxilares e/ou mandibulares para trás. Isso aumenta o comprimento da arcada na mesma proporção que a distalização alcançada. A distalização é geralmente realizada antes da erupção dos segundos molares permanentes. O tratamento sem extração da maloclusão de Classe II frequentemente requer a distalização dos molares superiores para uma relação final de Classe I.
