Esta obra reúne cinco conferencias que el cardenal John Henry Newman pronunció en las facultades de Filosofía y Letras y en la de Ciencias de la Universidad Católica de Irlanda. En ellas se abarcan algunos de los grandes temas que el cardenal veía como centrales dentro de la universidad: por un lado, las letras y la literatura, y por otro, los conflictos entre fe y razón, ciencia y revelación, en respuesta a los desafíos que el positivismo planteaba a la religión. Discursos y ensayos sobre estudios universitarios también incluye textos de expertos en disciplinas afines, que comentan la relevancia de estos escritos en el siglo XXI. El objetivo de esta iniciativa es traer al presente algunas de las ideas que Newman expone y reflexionar en torno a ellas
