Face au contexte de conflits internationaux durant les années 1940, les habitants de Recife ont commencé à cohabiter avec une forte présence de soldats, de publicités et de produits américains dans leur quotidien, ce qui a instauré un nouveau front de guerre auquel, s’ils ne participaient pas directement, ils étaient indirectement confrontés dans leur vie quotidienne : celui des coutumes et des paradigmes. La modernité, qui était arrivée dans la ville au début du siècle et suivait le modèle européen, a cessé de fonctionner face à un bombardement intense de nouvelles idées, de nouveaux produits et de nouveaux modes de vie imposés par les États-Unis et leur American way of life. Aidé par un complexe propagandiste bien structuré et des images séduisantes de liberté, d’abondance, de simplicité, etc., ce pays instaure un nouveau paradigme au Brésil et à Recife en particulier, qui côtoyait quotidiennement certains représentants de ce nouvel idéal. Cet ouvrage propose une analyse des structures discursives qui ont soutenu ce nouveau paradigme comportemental, créant de nouvelles possibilités de subjectivation, cherchant à montrer les nouveaux énoncés de la modernité et à souligner les changements dans la vie quotidienne de la ville de Recife pendant la première moitié des années 1940.
