1.1 Die Entwicklung der Me8technik Bei allen Kulturvolkern des Altertums findet man etwa zu gleicher Zeit einen Dbergang von der reinen Naturbetrachtung zur systemati­ schen Naturbeobachtung. Dieser Schritt erforderte jedoch sogleich gl’undsiitzliche Dberlegungen. Um mehrere Beobachtungen del’ gleichen Art miteinander vergleichen zu konnen, sah man sich gezwungen, Ver­ gleichsmaBstiibe festzulegen. Da es bei allen alten Kulturen hauptsiich­ lich die Priester waren, die das Naturgeschehen beobachteten, fanden derartige Betrachtungen, die man sehr fruh in der Astronomie und Geometl’ie anstellte, ihre Anwendung zuniichst bei kultischen Bauten. Das bekannteste Beispiel hierfUr sind die iigyptischen Pyramiden. Ratte man sich vorher damit begniigt, die Liingeneinteilung nach den KorpermaBen, z. B. Rand odeI’ Elle, des jeweiligen Beobachters VOI’­ zunehmen, so erforderte die Zusammenarbeit von Tausenden von Rilfs­ kriiften bei diesen groBen Bauvorhaben die Festlegung eines einheit­ lichen LiingenmaBstabes. Man wiihlte zu diesem Zweck als NormalmaB die KorpermaBe desjenigen Pharao, dem die Pyramide als Grabmal die­ nen sollte. Damit war die Erkenntnis gewonnen, daB die Grundlage jeder Messung auf einem Vergleich mit einem einheitlichen NormalmaB beruht.
