The requirements for high resolution audio circuitsare characterized by extremely high dynamic range andrelatively low signal frequencies. Fordigital-to-analog and analog-to-digital convertersthis implies special challenges related to the veryhigh resolution needed in the converter design. Thedominant design paradigm for audio converters isdelta-sigma modulation, a process in which speed istraded for resolution through the means ofoversampling and noise-shaping.Analysis of delta-sigma modulation is non-trivial andpublications are often highly theoretical, requiringadvanced mathematical skills to understand. Practicalcircuit design is usually based on rules of thumb, and bridging it with complex delta-sigma theory canbe challenging and time consuming. This book seeks tobridge the gap between theory and design rules, andto offer simplified estimates and performancepredictions that will allow designers to makequalified design trade-offs in an easier manner. Itis based on the Ph.D. work of the author and consistsof six peer reviewed publications, in addition to apreceding monograph which presents the context andtheoretical overview to understand their contents.
